Letter from our President: Libby Seftar
Dear APHA Members
I am honored to serve as your 2011-2012 President of the Arkansas Public Health Association. It's hard to believe that 2011 is over and we are beginning a new year full of fresh ideas, goals, visions and plans. During this time of the year, it is natural that we look ahead to what is to come, but it is important that we reflect on what occurred in 2011 and take those lessons with us as we move forward.
One of the biggest impacts on Public Health in Arkansas was the death of one of our own Public Health Champions, Dr. David Bourne. He was a distinguished physician and leader, mentor and visionary in crafting and guiding public health policy in Arkansas. He lead the fight against tobacco and thanks to his efforts Arkansas takes a lead in implementing policies which prevent smoking in public places, including restaurants, workplaces and automobiles.
To Honor Dr. Bourne's public health legacy, APHA Executive Council established the "Dr. David E. Bourne Public Health Award" to be given annually to the public health worker who best exemplifies the aptitude and skill in shaping and advocating sound public health policy. The award, although approved by the Executive Council, will be presented for approval to the APHA membership in May.
Looking ahead into 2012, there are many great opportunities to educate the general public on measures to improve lifelong health and prevent disease. Plan now for National Public Health Week, which is April 2-8, 2012. The theme this year is "A Healthier America Begins Today." It is important that we as Public Health professionals make it our mission to talk to friends, families, communities, leaders and our partners, to help raise awareness about the importance of disease prevention and living healthy. I challenge each of you to tell someone in your community about what you do and invite them to be a part of creating an environment where healthy lifestyles are priority.
Don't forget to start planning now for the annual conference May 9-11, 2012 in Hot Springs. The program committee is planning a great agenda. More information will be coming soon.
I look forward to working with you this year! Libby Seftar, President
